Thisbookhasevolvedfromatwo-termgraduatecourseinpartialdifferentialequationswhichIhavetaughtatNortheasternUniversitymanytimessince1980.Thefirsttermisintendedtogivethestudentabasicandclassicalintroductiontothesubject,includingfirst-orderequationsbythemethodofcharacteristicsandlinearsecond-orderequationswhichariseinmathematicalphysics:thewaveequation,Laplaceequation,andheatequation.Allofthismaterialismorethanadequatelycoveredbymanytextbookswhicharereadilyavailable.Thesecondterm,however,isintendedtointroducethestudenttoawidevarietyofmoremodernmethods,especiallytheuseoffunctionalanalysis,whichhascharacterizedmuchoftherecentdevelopmentofpartialdifferentialequations.Thislattermaterialisnotasreadilyavailable,exceptinanumberofspecializedreferencebooks.Thistextbookisintendedtobridgethisgapbyprovidingthestudentwithabasicintroductiontothesubjectandanexposuretosomeofthemoremodernmethods.
